Ranger

Ranger and me.

Ranger as puppy.

Ranger's sister is a champion Dock Diver.

Ranger's mom, started on herding sheep.

I love Ranger dearly. He is so loyal, checks back on me every few minutes when we are out hiking. He is very playful, loves to fetch and play tug-o-war. He’d rather I pet him or pay attention to him than to eat. He loves to swim, and will bring back sticks thrown into the ocean, bay, lakes, or streams. He is so much fun to be around, and even plays by himself tossing, fetching, and squeaking his ball. He is easy to train at home, learns very quickly. He is an eager traveler, rushes to the car and jumps in. But he has an intense interest in chasing cars, so I have to be very careful that he does not end up as a grease spot on the road. It took him three tries to ‘pass” his focus class, but I never gave up. In public his focus strays from me to other dogs and motor vehicles. He will crouch, stare, and leap up, just as one would ask of a well-trained herding dog. This makes it very challenging to take him for walks around cars. Fortunately, we live on a side street with minimal traffic. Dogs as intense as Border colllies can be over the top at times. He loves to go kayaking with us and my favorite place to take him is to an island in the bay where he is free to run off leash without the danger and distraction of cars.

His dam and his litter sister have both started on working sheep in Tucson. The trainer refers to them as rock stars. When we go down there this winter, we will start Ranger on sheep. Another litter sister is a champion dock diver. I see that in Ranger’s future as well.

His sire chewed through a brand new chain link fence to get to Ranger's dam. Ranger has the same proclivities for procreation, which is how my show pointed Aussie ended up in a family way. He may be the most challenging dog I have ever had, he is also the most fun.

Ranger Videos

Ranger leaps. This video makes me laugh every time I watch it.

Ranger does well at amusing himself, finding things to play with.

There was a trick challenge to teach your dog to put their paws on an object. This video was from Ranger’s first session, and he quickly mastered it.

Ranger was not watching when I threw his stick. He went searching through the driftwood on the beach, did not give up until he sniffed out the one I threw, and brought it back to me. This shows me he has the potential for upper level scent discrimination obedience work, and possible search and rescue.

Ranger playing with his puppies. Such a good daddy dog.
